I have NVIDIA GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i and am having the same problems cited by folks using GeForce 7050 / nForce 610i. Manually installing the latest driver from the nVidia website (with the help of Envy) got the graphics to work properly. Although there are still imperfections, at least X starts now without going into low graphics mode, and I can get the proper resolution for my screen rather than the 800x600 it was forcing on me previously.
See http:// ubuntuforums. org/showthread. php?t=725474 for details about my audio situation, which remains unresolved.
