Bug Description

For the past few days both Unity 3d and gnome-shell performance has been incredibly poor on precise. I suspect that the 3d drivers are to blame because both of those desktops experience this poor performance but unity-2d does not. Additionally the slowdowns happen during periods when the 3d graphics are actively doing something (i.e. reavealing the Unity launcher or moving a window in a composited environment), but when doing something that does not require the 3d graphics such as typing this comment there is no noticeable slowdown.

There seems to be serious problems with the 295.40 driver in regards to 3d performance at the moment. If you look in the comments here http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/982485 you find some info or google around. You may have to wait for nvidia to update before it works again,

Upgrading to unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.1 should also help. It contains a fix for poor OpenGL performance.
