Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.04 beta
Happens permanetly after starting ubuntu(3D) or gnome3 (3d). Does not happen when starting ubuntu2d ore gnome classic (2d). There is also no 3d-grafik support for games etc...

This happens only after 2012-April-16, not before 2012-April-12. There must be a NEW bug in some release of 12.04 between those two dates.

Xorg does not freeze, all hotkeys still work, even applications stay responding as in they still accept mouse and keyboard-inputs. (e.g. applications can still be terminated with alt+F4, tested by terminating a running skype call while the screen was frozen, rhytmbox was also still controlable)

Only the composed image seems to be frozen.

Foehn, I think you will probably find the cause of your problems was this package introduced on 13 April:
nvidia-graphics-drivers (295.40-0ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

This new nvidia driver is known to cause serious problems with performance and stability (compiz crashes); bug 982710, bug 980298.

I'm not sure we've yet triaged all the bugs relating to nvidia 295.40 accurately enough though.

summary: - Xorg freeze or compiz freeze
+ [nvidia 295.40] Xorg freeze or compiz freeze

Hi!

Well, I have a problem which seems similar: compiz freezes often at destop change (I use the cube rotation), and may be (most of the time) unfreezed by switching to the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) then back (Ctrl+Alt+F7).

However, this happen on a first DELL with a NVidia video card (and there was no problem with 11.10), but also on a recent one with an Intel card.

As a consequence, this has nothing IMHO in common with bug #982485.
