As described in this thread (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2546510#post2546510), a recent security fix to the nvidia drivers causes poor performance.

The suggested solution is to downgrade to a patched version of the 295.33 drivers.

The affected package (in my case) is nvidia-current version 295.40-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1.

Related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/983323, except my issue is not with suspend/resume and I see no graphical corruption. Instead, performance is affected (~8 fps in glxgears, kwin effects turn off).
