Screen won't enter power down

The screen won't enter power down. It "blanks" (i.e. goes black but the backlight is still on). I have configured this to happen automatically after 10 mins of inactivity, however this doesn't work.

Also running xset dpms force off, suspend, standby will either cause it to do the same thing, or it will flicker on and off a few times before coming back on.

I should also add that I have ruled out gnome-screensaver. I removed the package from my system and it doesn't make any difference to the issue.

I'm using the 295.40 version of the NVIDIA driver and I have the same problem.

i have the same problem, and the last ok driver was 295.33!! for me, after this driver is the problem, i am now with nouveau kde 12.04, and everything is ok. (dell XPS-L702).

This issue is more serious than it sounds. After unlocking the screen my display has horizontal flickering lines and a bad/visible refresh rate. They disappear after a couple of minutes but I'm afraid this will affect my display on the long run.

I have noticed this, particularly on low brightness settings. I
believe it is to do with the ambient light sensor, nothing sinister in
regards to drivers. However I too would welcome any information on
this.

Hi,

I don't believe that dimmer control has much affect here. As stated in
the OP even xset dpms direct commands fail to sleep or suspend the
screen. More than likely this is a bug in the kernel, as the latest
nvidia drivers in earlier kernel versions would work successfully.

That said, I'm happy I can finally suspend and resume the machine as a
whole without random lockups, so I can live with a fading back light
until this is addressed =)
