Bug Description

Please check the attachment first to see what is "Six Screens"

I was testing Ubuntu 12.04 Beta1

My laptop is Lenovo IdeaPad Y450.
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y450
And the laptop's discrete graphic is NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M.
http://www.geforce.com/Hardware/NotebookGPUs/geforce-gt-130m

I found that the default open source graphic driver's performance unacceptable.
I then installed the proprietary driver, then the "Six Screens" occurred, SO SAD.

Please help. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

This bug affects me too!

Lenovo Ideapad Y450 with a GT-240M video card.

I installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS and i got exactly the six screens as mentioned above.
Also the FN brightness button doesn't dim the screen brightness!

After that i installed the additional drivers, but it remains the same.

I have to switch back to 11.04 as it is unuseable now.

Hi

I installed Ubuntu 11.10 with the open source drivers, and FN brigthness works and screen is fine.

then i installed the nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version current) (recommended)
The FN brightness function doesn't work, but the screen is fine.

After that installed the (post-release updates)(version current updates) and now also the FN brightness function
doesn't work, but now i got also the Six Screens ! (thus with ubuntu 11.10)

After installing Ubuntu 12.04 with the open source driver, the FN brightness works and screen is fine.

After installing the nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version current) (recommended) the Six Screens appeared !

Also te post released updates installed, but it didn change anything.

please, make this thing to work!

Hi heian,

You can add this two lines into /etc/X11/xorg.conf to let the graphics work temporarily:
 Option "ModeValidation" "NoTotalSizeCheck"
 Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

Add it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf ,between 'Section "Device"' and 'EndSection'.
Just like this:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Default Device"
 Option "NoLogo" "True"
 Option "ModeValidation" "NoTotalSizeCheck"
 Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
EndSection

Good luck!

Hi Jactry,

Thanks for your reply!

I know the "EnableBrightnessControl=" line, it let the brightness work with the proprietary driver.

But what does the "NoTotalSizeCheck" line doing? Is it to solve the 'Six Screens' problem?
And what do you mean by: let the graphics work 'temporarily'

(I wish i could join this thread and post my findings here, but i can start playing around with
the laptop after half of June. Really need to work with if for now)

Yep,the "NoTotalSizeCheck " line is to solve the 'Six Screens' problem.
And 'temporarily' meaning this is just a 'Workaround' way,and I think it should be no the ultimate solution.

Oh, my poor english. Can you understand to me?

Ok, i'm about to have my holiday soon, but i'll try to install one more time 12.04 and
try your solution. Will be cool to have 12.04 running.

I'll update here how it works!

I think it was not Ubuntu 12.04's bug but new nvidia drivers' bug.
And I am using Ubuntu 12.04 now.
