dmesg shows that unity-panel-service crashes when i click the sound menu:

This bug only happens when Option "Composite" in xorg.conf is set to "Disable". With compositing enabled, everything works fine.

I installed 12.04 alpha 1 on a newly partitioned disk. The behaviour was exactly the same: mousing over the sound applet icon caused the error reported above. zerwas' Composite xorg.conf edit seems to be all that was needed to make the problem go away.

My xorg.conf was generated by nvidia-settings for two monitors of different resolutions on the same card using 'X screen + Xinerama', if that helps.

From what I'm concluding after reading Sean and zerwas' comments, this appears to be more of a nvidia driver issue rather than one about indicator-sound. I might be wrong though.

Bilal Akhtar, not only nvidia users are affected. ATI Radeon HD 3200 here.

According to the unity guys composite should not be disabled. Bug belongs to nvideodriver, the xorg conf it generates should not disable composite.
