Bug Description

Upgraded to 11.04 My laptop won't redirect output to an external monitor or a projector via the Fn+F8 key combination. This worked under 10.10 My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop with a GeForce 8400M GS display card installed.

The Ubuntu Display control panel won't detect a second display when the "Detect monitors" button is clicked. It also can't detect the laptop's own display type and labels it as "Unknown". Using the Nvidia X Server control panel, I can see that the laptop's display is a Seiko/Epson panel and, when I click the "Detect displays" button I do get the second display (a flat panel monitor),but it is labelled: "CRT-0 disabled".

I've activated the drivers in the "Additional drivers" panel twice and used Synaptic to run Nvidia-update (followed by a restart). I still have "This driver is activated but not currently in use" in the Additional Drivers control panel plus, in the header, "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I've regularly run all the system updates.

I don't know whether this is the same or a different bug, but I have similar issues with a Lenovo W520, issues that are extensively discussed on the forums. There are workarounds for external VGA monitors but not, as far as I've been able to tell, for external digital monitors.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - I'll run the process you ask for. Where shall I
put the result - email to you or add it to the bug report on line?

Kind regards

Roger Haydon (aka blueskyabove)

Hi Roger,
Sorry, I forgot to ask you to do something prior to the apport-collect; can you install the xdiagnose package and then redo the apport-collect 858046 - that will then add *loads* of info about your X setup.

Hi Dave,

Will do - sorry about the delay, your emails keep ending up in my
spambox irrespective of me telling them not to go there!. xdiagnose is
showing as already installed and I think it was installed when I ran
apport previously. However, I will run it again and see what happens.
Do I need to run xdiagnose first - if so, how?

Roger

Good, that's got the xdiagnose data in it, so hopefully someone who knows the Nvidia stuff can look at it.
