nvidia isn't loading on current oneiric and nouveau is getting used instead. This started happening in the past few days, it worked fine in the alpha 2 time frame.

Please take a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11049764, I think we're all having the same issue.

The solution for me was to blacklist nouveau in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. But because this entry was already in /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf I think this file don't get loaded.

I'm still having this problem, and I'm positive that I have the latest updates. I'm not sure what's wrong anymore...

I received the advice about blacklisting the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf , from yofel at ubuntu+1 # on irc.freenode.org . I did this at the tty as root in the recovery kernel , and this workaround works for my setup. Previous to the workaround I reinstalled the nvidia-current driver , sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-current . Then I did, sudo nvidia-xconfig to set xorg.conf . Not sure if the nvidia reinstall is absolutely necessary, but nvidia-xconfig is advisable.

I updated my sons computer to oneiric from natty yesterday so that he could do some alpha testing and ran into the same problem (i.e. it was using nouveau after the upgrade, but was working fine with nvidia-current before the upgrade). His system has a GTX465 in it.

I --reinstalled nvidia-current, but it didn't have any effect (still boots to unity2d and nouveau shows in lsmod). I also tried adding nouveau and lbm-nouveau to the blacklist.conf, but it had no effect either. As sworddragon mentioned, these were already blacklisted in the nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf. So, that workaround doesn't appear to be working for me. Maybe I need to try the reinstall again now that it's in the other blacklist (will try tonight)...

Is the duplicate status of this report correct? I probably just don't know enough about plymouth and the boot process to understand why the right drivers don't load when the DM starts.

This issue is still valid IMHO. I was only able to fix it by doing the following hack:

* renaming /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.backup
* creating a link /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so --> /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so

Apparently, Xorg is not honoring nvidia drivers. i tried several fixes proposed in forums, such as blacklisting nouveau (I even removed it completely), but Xorg loads the incorrect GLX module at startup, no matter how hard I tried to point it to the nvidia driver in xorg.conf
