Bug Description

I made a fresh install of ubuntu 10.10 RC on my multimedia pc, since my smplayer was trashed on my 10.04 that was installed before. Install and first boot went fine, but after installing nvidia driver and upgrades:

-) the splash screen is replaced by console output
-) after 10 seconds i get a terminal login prompt
-) after over 3 minutes (!!!) X finally loads and i get my desktop

and here another chart without using the nvidia driver in the xorg.conf --> since the "modprobe" lines are the only ones colored differently, i guess they are whats causing my problem.. im gonna try to uninstall the nvidia drivers completly and try to boot again..
p.s.: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesnt do anything, how to get a freshly generated xorg.conf for my hardware?

after uninstalling the nvidia driver the machine boots as expected, without showing the terminal login and without 3 minutes delay, so this is definitly related to nvidia driver

This affects me too. I'm using 10.10, 460 GTX.

However I found that nouveau kernel module is still loaded on boot even if nvidia proprietary driver is installed and activated. When I blacklisted nouveau the issue looks to be fixed.

Disabling nouveau is described here
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/260.19.12/README/commonproblems.html

It is needed to create /etc/modprobe.d/disable-nouveau.conf file with the following two lines added:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

After doing this I didn't meet this issue for 3 days.
