Deinstalling nvidia-common, rebooting and installing it again, then rebooting again solved the issue for me.

Marufaberlin, thanks for the hint, but that didn't work for me.

Tried this commands:
apt-get remove nvidia-common
reboot now
apt-get install nvidia-common
reboot now

Driver still doesn't load.

Just hit this problem with kubuntu.

I tried completely removing all the nividia packages, rebooting, then installing them again, and it still didn't work.

I've reverted to kernel 2.6.32-23, which works fine.

Oh, I also tried switching to the open source nvidia drivers, but they didn't seem to support multiple displays.

I've found the fix.
For some reason, headers for 2.6.32-24 were not installed.
After I installed them, everything went fine.

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.
