Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10, no window manager is started when I login to GNOME via GDM. The applications in my startup items do launch, but they have no window decoration and I cannot switch input to any of them. To fix this, I have to switch to the console and run 'compiz --replace' to get a window manager.

If I choose "Failsafe GNOME" from the login window, I get a window manager.

This did not happen with Ubuntu 9.10

This doesn't seem to be an X issue, as “compiz --replace” is working later in your session.

I'll move it to gnome-session, which is responsible for starting things like compiz; it's possible that compiz is getting started before some environment it depends on is ready.

affects: mesa (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu)

I found the following error in my .xsession-errors:

gnome-session[4032]: DEBUG(+): GsmAutostartApp: starting 1017a6a257dbb2e409126402743584376800000016950022.desktop: command=/usr/bin/compiz.real --sm-client-id 1017a6a257dbb2e409126402743584376800000016950022 --ignore-desktop-hints --loose-binding move resize place decoration animation ccp startup-id=1017a6a257dbb2e409126402743584376800000016950022

This prompted the workaround:

ln -s /usr/bin/compiz /usr/bin/compiz.real

And minimal research shows that compiz.real disappeared from the package with 10.04

So now compiz starts up properly.

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.
