Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Booting Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit Desktop CD on a HP Pavillon dv2500, the following card displays a default resolution which is not usable. The screen is offset to the right, there are artifacts and horizontal bars on the screen.

Would it be possible to do two things in this bug:
1) Create a guide on the wiki explaining another workaround which explains how to either change the resolution (or installing the binary drivers from the Live CD without restarting). This will assure that people with this issue can check a verified document explaining how to get ubuntu installed on this hardware.
2) Get the default resolution for this machine to be 1280x800 instead of 1024x768 from the 10.04.1 CD

00:12.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation C67 [GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M] [10de:0531] (rev a2)
 Kernel driver in use: nouveau
 Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau

Workaround: Though the interface is not usable, you can still guide your mouse and go to the correct items. Go to System > Preferences > Monitors and change the default resolution of 1024x768 to 1280x800.

I am uploading a picture of what happens when you boot this computer off the Lucid Live CD. It sort of looks like window blinds.

Default should be 1280x800. Other resolutions that do not work properly under the 'nouveau' driver should not be displayed as possible resolution, they should definitely not be the default. We can either fix these resolutions, so that they work as expected or we can take them out of the possible choices. First step would be to have the proper resolution come up by default.

This bug was assigned to nvidia-graphics-drivers, although it affects nouveau (restricted binary drivers do not come on the Live CD). Assigning to nouveau.

@Bryce - please confirm the proper bug assignment
@67GTA - Please confirm the issue on the nouveau driver

Ok. So there are two problems in this bug - X starting in 1280x800 by default, and the 1024x768 resolution not being usable.

X not starting in 1280x800 is due to a mis-detected TV output connection, resulting in X trying to find a shared mode for the TV output & the laptop display, picking 1024x768. The mis-detected TV output should be fixed in Maverick, so we should concentrate on the broken 1024x768 mode.

I have the same graphic card, and I have the exact same problem in Ubuntu 10.10, and also 11.04 beta. Will this be fixed for 11.04 final?

Still about the Natty beta... I tried to change the resolution to 1280x800, but it wasn't available on the monitor preferences window. To enable it, I had to uncheck the "same image on all monitors" box - then all the resolutions are available. Without unchecking that box, only the resolutions also good for TV output are available. And all of those are corrupted (striped) on this video card.
It would be really nice to fix all the resolutions, but at least to set the default to the correct (1280x800) resolution, so that the system works "out of the box"...

I am on Natty final on a HP Pavilion DV2840se with a geforce 7150 630m video card and the same issue is present. The card detect the TV OUT as connected so it keep the resolution below the default for my laptop.

I configured nouveau.tv_disable=1 in my kernel not ir start in the correct resolution but it is unusable as mentioned in this bug.

I tryied with out of the box drivers, latest updates and xorg-edgers packages and all of them has the same bahaviers.

It would be great to have nouvau working in the correct resolution for my laptop.

Three years after being reported, this bug still remains unchanged in Ubuntu, preventing many users from install the system.
Simply boot from live cd or from pen drive makes the screen unreadable, with heavy flicker.
Ordinary users do not know how to deal with this problem and create rejection of Ubuntu, destroying all the work to convince them to try the system.

komputes, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Tried to install Lubuntu 13.10, Linux Mint 16 XFCE or Cinnamon and had problems launching the installer due to distorted graphics. Linux Mint has compatibility mode that works fine for the installer. However after installing and rebooting I get the distorted graphics again. The text terminal (ALT+CTRL+F1) is more or less usable, but far from ideal.

The only to solve the problem for me was by using nomodeset in grub.

Can confirm, it's the Nvidia driver installed however now. Will work on external monitor if the monitor is plugged in prior to boot. GeForce 7150m as well.
Horizontal double image, stretched vertical with interlacing.

What makes this unusual is the mouse cursor stays within the side bounds of the screen undistorted and clicks are where the image should have been horizontally but matches image location vertically. Mouse is bounded to screen sides but will go down to the off screen to where the bottom of image should be, about 2x screen height.
