Bug Description
Binary package hint: plymouth
When plymouth is installed and running on my computer (with a NVIDIA GTX 260) the Ubuntu splash displays properly but my displays always start at 1440x900 - not the 1680x1050 intended, even if I forcefully specify it in xorg.conf. Running:
sudo apt-get purge ^plymouth-
to remove all plymouth themes, hence leaving the computer with no splash to run, fixes the problem, so I think that is the cause.

Plymouth is not setting the resolution, all it's doing is opening and using the 640x480 VGA framebuffer. That this changes the resolution used by the nvidia driver afterwards looks like a bug in the nvidia driver.
