wrong nvidia driver installed on restricted-driver activation

Bug Description
After installing the restricted nvidia-drivers and rebooting the driver would fail to load and Ubuntu would revert to the failsafe graphics.
In synaptic I saw Ubuntu installed nvidia-current (version 195.36.15 ...) but mixed a few different versions of other packages with it (nvidia-
I tried installing the correct packages (nvidia-glx-185 and such (which is version 195.36.15; very confusing))
Now the driver says it's "enabled but not in use".
I thought about changing the xorg.conf file myself, but I haven't had to open one in a year or so and now it appears an xorg.conf file is no longer necessary.
