Sorry for the delay but I couldn't have a look to the bug #539889 (because it was a private bug).
It seems that you have a little problem with OpenGL backend of Cairo-Dock.
So what's your graphic card? Your drivers (free drivers, Catalyst, Nvidia)?
 > you can launch these commands from a terminal :
   $ glxinfo |grep OpenGL

Does Cairo-Dock work without OpenGL backend (if you launch CD with "cairo-dock -c")?
If it doesn't work, can you gives us messages when you launch CD from a terminal with this command: cairo-dock -ol debug

Yes, cairo-dock -c is working but the implementation into the Ubuntu Application Menu is wrong.

This said, the whole system gives many error messages, but things seem to
work, in fact cairo-dock seems to work. For example, if i turn on a usb disk
or put a dvd on the dvd-tray the system gives an error message saying that
the disk couldn't be mounted, and right after the message it actually mounts
it!. I hope this can be of help. Greetings.

I think I have the same or a similar problem, and I have run apport to report it but I thought additional information might be helpful. I'm running Compiz without problems but if I start Cairo-Dock with OpenGL it crashes my X session immediately and I have to log back in. If I don't use OpenGL Cairo-Dock runs fine as far as I can tell.

I'm on Lucid, with patches up-to-date, on a Lenovo Z61m with ATI x1400. Cairo-dock version is 2.1.3.6. I have saved copies of .xsession-errors with and without, and I ran Cairo-dock -l debug with and without and saved that output as well. I don't have a stacktrace, however.

It seems that your graphic card (and its drivers) doesn't support some OpenGL functions...
Can you try our latest 'weekly release' from our 'weekly ppa' => https://launchpad.net/~cairo-dock-team/+archive/weekly or http://www.glx-dock.org/ww_page.php?p=ppa%20Weekly&lang=en
With : 'cairo-dock -o', 'cairo-dock -O' and 'cairo-dock -c'

It died all three ways. However, this time it did not crash my X session, and provided a dialog saying it crashed, with the checkmark and X. It also showed a small piece of a window where the dock should appear. I took a screenshot of that. It was also unhappy about various modules having been compiled with the earlier version, but that seems appropriate, and that did not seem to be killing it.

I am attaching the logs that resulted from running the three different ways. I can include the screenshot if you want it.

I did not include -l debug. I can re-run if you want me to. :)

Oh, I suppose you simply used this command: 'sudo apt-get install cairo-dock' :)
Simply do that:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

you have to upgrade the plug-ins as well, otherwise none of them will load
if the versions mismatch.

@Matttbe : he has an nVidia, so it should urn smoothly. let's wait for his
return with up-to-date plug-ins, and let's wait the release of Lucid, it's
still a beta after all.

Gary B (gar37bic) wrote :

Hi, sorry for the delay. It appears from the convo that this might be a problem somewhere else, which does not surprise me. Lucid is the first version where OpenGL worked well enough on this laptop to use Compiz Under 8.04 I could either use the opensource drivers with no OpenGL, or use the proprietary drivers which did not suspend - suspending is more important, so I had to suffer along without OpenGL. Some day I'll be able to upgrade to a newer laptop with the new Radeon open source hotness :).

Anyway, just to followup - I re-ran cairo with the three different options. using -o I still get crash message (with the apport panel, but that fails to get sent because it's no longer an "Ubuntu package"), and sometimes it actually dies but sometimes it stays running even though it says it crashed. When it stays running the panel is a flickers rapidly between a piece of a standard window (with 'standard header, 'File', 'Edit', etc.) about 200 pixels wide (the rest of the window width is transparent), and a full-width black rectangle. Some of the icons are not there - their place is there but there is no icon. With -O I get the same same visuals but I don't think it ever thinks it is crashing.

Looking in the log output, I don't see anything unusual so I won't bother posting them unless you want me to.

If it's helpful to you I can perform other tests but for regular use I'll just work around this by starting it without OpenGL (using -c), which seems to work just fine.

Just a question: Does this bug occur simply because my driver only supports glx 1.2, and cairo-dock requires glx1.3? If so, perhaps the simplest short term solution would be to default cairo-dock to not use OpenGL when that case is detected.

I don't know how relevant this is, but compiz (version 0.8.4) seems to run fine.

I just remembered a fact that may be useful. In actual fact, compiz did NOT work correctly when I first upgraded to Lucid beta. It was subject to a random problem where the screen acted like it was a TV that had lost its vertical and/or horzontal hold. That bug was 541501.

The fix or workaround for this was to edit /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf, changing modeset:
  options radeon modeset=0

I hope this helps.

I've just decided to uninstall cairo. I have some problems since I upgraded
to lucid and, as I don't know where they come from, I am uninstalling the
packages that cause crashes. But until today yes, I had that crash. Anyway,
despite the crash cairo was there, and seemingly working fine, as far as I
know. I don't know much, but if you want me to try something just tell me
the steps and I'll do it. Greetings.

GLX1.3 is not needed any more, since we don't use pbuffers any more (from
version 2.1.4)
for instance on an Intel 450 (notebook) the dock runs smoothly with opengl
(though there is no stencil buffer available)

After looking at some logs and so forth, I re-ran cairo-dock -o and cairo-dock -c again and saved the logs after doing very similar actifvities on both, so you can see the differences - hopefully there is useful information there. I also took screendumps of cairo-dock -o when 'active' (mouse inside, moving around over the icons) and 'inactive' (mouse elsewhere on the screen. I am going to upload these.

I was unable to quit from cairo-dock -o - the 'OK' panel may have been there but I could not see it or find it with arbitrary clicking around, finally used Ctl-C.

I have the nearly same issues as Gary B. I have a similar graphics card - ATI Technologies Inc M56GL [Mobility FireGL V5250] in a Thinkpad T60p. I am using Lucid with the latest upgrades as of this afternoon. Cairo dock runs fine with no OpenGL. Starting up the OpenGL Cairo Dock immediately crashes me out of X back to the login prompt.

so maybe it was a bug in the "pbuffer" part of the drivers, since we no
longer use pbuffer from the v2.2
