Bug Description

In http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html we can read:

“We believe recent NVIDIA UNIX graphics drivers are affected by a recently reported fan speed issue in 195.36.08 and 195.36.03.
Until the problem is resolved, we recommend that UNIX users revert to the 190.53 web release, or the 195.30 public beta.”

From http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/announcement.php?f=14 :

After posting the 196.75 NVIDIA Windows graphics driver, NVIDIA reported the following message:

Quote:
We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with
the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and
root cause this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return
to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily
removed from our website.

We believe recent NVIDIA UNIX graphics drivers, 195.36.08 and 195.36.03, are also affected by this. Until the problem is resolved, we recommend that UNIX users revert to the 190.53 web release or the 195.30 public beta.

We are in the process of removing 195.36.08 and 195.36.03 from NVIDIA's FTP site.

We will post more information as it is available.

Changed in nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed
summary: - fan speed issue in 195.36.08 and 195.36.03
+ fan speed issue in 195.36.08 and 195.36.03 (may potentially destroy the
+ GPU)

@Philippe Coval: Under Lucid, nouveau is a reliable alternative. The positive point is that it supports KMS (and not only UMS like proprietary driver) but the negative one is that it doesn't support 3D acceleration.

The recalled driver is still present in the Ubuntu repositories, with no earlier or later driver available. (the nvidia-glx-185 package is now a metapackage for nvidia-current, which is Nvidia's 195.18 driver). Don't you think this should be fixed?

No the driver available in Lucid repositories is still the 195.36.08. As soon as the packages will be updated to 195.36.15 available here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=148947 , this bug report should be marked as fixed but not now.
I think Ubuntu can't release a LTS with a bug like this. (Easy to fix now).
Nouveau is an alternative for some users but as it doesn't support 3D acceleration, for a lot of users it's not a good alternative.

Alberto has uploaded a 195.36.15 nvidia-current package, and it will be available as soon as the archive freeze is over when beta 1 is released.

This bug affects me as well. Good to hear that it will be fixed soon. Though it seems as of right now it is available in Lucid repositories. I feel that while an archive freeze may be in effect, a notice should be made available to users. This could be easily done on the Beta 1 Known Issues section and would probably aid users who trust Ubuntu to provide reliable software through its official repositories.

nvidia-graphics-drivers (195.36.15-0ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
    - Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash when rendering
      occurred while the X server was not on the active VT.
    - Fixed a regression that caused the driver to fail to properly
      adjust the GPU fan speed on some GPUs.
    - Fixed a bug that prevented performance level transitions on
      recent GPUs with SDDR3 and GDDR5 memory.
  * debian/nvidia-$flavour.{postinst|prerm}.in:
    - Call gmenucache trigger so that the icon of nvidia-settings
      shows up in the menu (LP: #522969).
  * debian/nvidia-current.links{32}.in:
    - Add link to libOpenCL.so in /usr/lib and in /usr/lib32.

The drivers aren't on the CD and the package has already been uploaded, so there will only be a very small time frame where someone installing will get the 195.16.08 drivers.
