I have an Nvidia GTX460 graphics card and have the most up to date version of Ubuntu Natty and have a similar problem: after selecting logout from GUI menu the system returns to the main login screen but the whole screen is corrupted with coloured noise making it impossible to read text or use the GUI.

System info:

Nvidia driver version: 280.13

GeForce GTX 460, VBIOS VERSION 70.04.3a.00.00

Linux puppypc 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 20:45:39 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

That version is no more supported; please open a new bug report if the actual archive found version also has the same issue.
