Bug Description

After I activate a proprietary NVidia driver (the card is GeForce 9800GT) I observe that some window resizing effects cease working. In particular toggling vertical and horizontal maximisation does not work. I can only one time maximise the window and can not switch it back to its original size (using my defined keyboard shortucts, i.e. Ctrl-Shift-h and Ctrl-Shift-v). After removing the proprietary driver the things start to work. The ubuntu version is 9.04 (Jaunty) 64-bit.

Is this bug reproducible with the latest Lucid packages ?
Tanks in advance.

Sorry, my last comment is partially a mistake or confusion. The buggy behaviour in the actual bug 393626 concern a 64-bit workstation machine with an NVidia driver (while bug 581085 concern my 32-bit notebook with an Intel 945 chipset). I am still using Jaunty on the workstation machine so that I can not say anything about Lucid behaviour on it for the moment. I have plans to install Lucid in few weeks. Then I will be able to provide a relevant answer.

Anyway, the actual bug 393626 and the other bug 581085 report the same problem from user's point of view.

Hello, I have now installed Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid), 64-bit version on the 64-bit workstation with an NVidia GeForce 9800 GT GPU. The bug is still there. But I have to specify it more precisely.

The bug "works" only when visual effects are activated. (I tested it using the "Normal level".) I.e. I can not then toggle windows size (using my shortcuts). However as soon as I turn the visual effects off I can toggle size of the windows.

I.e. from user's point of view the behaviour of the actual bug 393626 is the same as that that of the bug 581085 (which occurs on a quite different hardware).

To complete my comment, I am using NVIDIA Driver Version 195.36.24 (the one offered by default). I have installed all available updates.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in nvidia graphics driver.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

I think I should also say clearly what I meant by the word "toggle". By "toggle (vertical or horisontal window size)" I meant that it should resize a window back and forth. I.e. first press of my keyboard shortcut increases window size. Next press of the same shortcut decreases it to its original size. Third press enlarges it again. Etc etc.

This periodic (many times repeatable) size change fails to work when visual effect are active. I usualy need (and test) this functionality on a gnome terminal window.

Hello Fabio,

no, I have not tried it yet. I will think about this option.

However, now I want to say that this issue is not nvidia-specific. I have the same problem also on a notebook with an Intel 945GM chipset. If I log into Unity environment, the toggle mode of window resizing does not work. The same problem used to exist also in previous versions of Ubuntu if I turned visual effects on.

Hence I think that the clue to the problem should not be sought for in a proprietary driver but in some other component.

Greetings
Martin.

Two days ago I tested development version of ubuntu 13.04 i386 on a laptop. (With the Unity desktop.)

The bug is still there. It is present on any hardware I have tested so far. (Notebooks, laptops, deskop PCs, regardless the kind of graphics card.)

The bug is extremly annoying for me because I often need to quickly switch the size (vertical or horisontal or both) of desktop windows.
