Bug Description

I upgraded my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64bit) to Ubuntu 15.04. (64bit)
When I trying to play some video file (mkv,mp4 or avi), VLC (2.2.0~rc2+git20150501+r58228+30+13~ubuntu15.04.1) does not play video, only audio stream. I hear the voices or film effects, but no any picture. I see only the black screen. (I have installed on my system the nvidia-340 driver package)

And some times the VLC crash inmediatly when I start to play video file...

I installed the unstable vlc package (3.0.0~~git20150319+r59816+33~ubuntu15.04.1 ), but the results are same. (But...this version of VLC no crash. But black screen with only sound too...)

Hallo Hodnik,

maybe you have to install/reinstall a codec pack?

Hello Christian,

I did it...but nothing. The problem is same. (Uninstall and reinstall ubuntu restricted extras 63)

Can I send any logfile or other, that could help to you solve this problem?

I installed the Xine player, and it works. Hmm...Weird...

But...I like...love VLC...It's my favourite!

Oh, just a moment...I forget to tell you...that VLC works under X.org Nouveau Display Driver!
When I changed nvidia 340.76 (closed, tested), VLC stopped work.

Maybe the VLC and nvidia drv. don't like each other. :)

But under, with 14.04LTS+nvidia 331 combo VLC works perfectly.

Nvidia drv need me...but VLC need too...(X.org driver does not manage the videocard energy saver function, and it's too noise and loud)

Thanks for your help,
Ákos Hodnik

Hi,

I think your graphic card driver has a Problem interacting with vlc. Which graphics card do you have? Did you tried an older driver which seamed to work?

I seem to be affected by this bug. I'll do some experiments with nvidia drivers and report back.
Currently running vlc 2.2.0-1 and nvidia-340-updates 340.76 on Ubuntu 15.04.

With nvidia-340 and nvidia-340-updates the video freezes after about 45 seconds and the audio continues. The user interface remains responsive.
With nvidia-304 (304.125) the audio becomes choppy and stuck like a scratched vinyl record and the user interface freezes. Had to drop to text prompt and give it the three-finger salute.
Will try the nouvoueaouue drivers next.

Didn't get to the nouveau drivers. Installed the nvidia-304-updates and it works. Playback is fine, kept going for the 5 mins that I tested. Can jump around in the video and everything.

Correction. It failed with a different video. Completely froze-up the computer.
It works fine with the nouveau drivers after purging all nvidia stuff.

I am having the same problem with Xubuntu 15.10 using the proprietary Nvidia drivers. VLC only shows black screen for many (but not all) videos. Xine plays them just fine.
