Bug Description

After a reboot after a routine update of Ubuntu, the xserver broke so that ubuntu boots into the command line.

I have installed the latest BIOS for my desktop, which is a HP Pavilion HPE H8-1150UK with a NVIDIA GeForce GT530.

robert@ewok:~$ uname -a
Linux ewok 3.2.0-57-generic #87-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 12 21:35:10 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

After typing startx at the command line, I got an error message saying:

NVIDIA: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 304.88, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 304.108. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.

Fatal server error:

Update:

Last night I managed to find a work around this issue. It seems that for Ubuntu LTS 12.04, the default kernel provided in the updates 'links to' (I'm not sure what the technical word is) a less recent NVIDIA driver version, 304.88, while the nvidia driver update installed on my machine on the 21st September was version 304.108. I therefore installed successively more recent kernel binaries until I found that 3.11.0-14 provided support for the NVIDIA drivers now installed on my machine. I have pasted a copy of my /usr/src directory below, and you can see the installation of nvidia drivers and new kernels until xserver worked again for 3.11.0-14.

I presume that the issue was caused by an incorrect dependency in the ubuntu package manager / update system.

Best wishes (and a merry Christmas and happy New Year!),
Robert Johnson

So how do I fix it?
Can you post a step by step process of it please?

ok, I just fixed mine by removing the new Nvidia drivers.

sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*

Then I installed the older version of nvidia.

sudo apt-get install nvidia-304

Then I rebooted and I got desktop. :-)

Hi,

Glad you've got it fixed!

You could also have upgraded to a very recent version of the kernel (as I did), the instructions to upgrade the kernel on Ubuntu will be on the Internet somewhere. It's just another sudo apt-get install command. Sorry I can't help more, am away from home & replying via iPhone!

I think your way is better though as I don't think the most recent kernel (3.11.14 by memory?) version is supported on Ubuntu 12.04. I haven't noticed any problems so far, but if I do, i'll uninstall that kernel versions and do things your way.

Cheers,
Robert
