Bug Description

3 out 5 times I logout or shutdown my laptop freezes. I don't know how to troubleshoot this problem myself, so I would gladly provide more information if needed.

This problem has presented since the installation of 12.04 (clean install), and has not been fixed by any update.

I think this may be a regression since 11.10 did not have this problem.

From the symptoms, I would say it is similar to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/767927 (purple bar on top some of the times).

When I am successfully able to logout. I've tested going into console and try 'sudo service lightdm stop ', and again 3 out 5 my system freezes.

More info:
    up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04
    Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop.
    Nvidia 310m (proprietary drivers)

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I saw a little lightdm update on my last upgrade, but the problem still remains.

I appreciate any help in this matter.

In the last days I received a kernel update, an nvidia update and some lightdm updates.

The problem still remains. My guess now is that it has to do with power saving issues.

I'm getting very desperate here. I would appreciate if any can take a look.

Regards.

I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and the problem seems does not present itself (a week with no problems)

This behavior, then, it is related to the Nvidia driver.

Should I refile the bug? Do I need to enter more information?

Regards.

affects: lightdm (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu)

Thanks Robert Ancell (robert-ancell) for changing the status.

I had experienced no shutdown problems running the nouveau driver for several weeks. However, I got back to the Nvidia driver.

I bought the Humble Indie Bundle 6, and nouveau was VERY lagy.

Now the problem is back: 3 out 5 times I try to shutdown my machine, it does not power off but gets stuck either on a black screen with a horizontal purple bar on top, or in an infinite loop in the Ubuntu's dot animation.

I would run test, or upload any log you ask me to.

I appreciate your response.
Regards.

I am running an older build (11.10) on the same system (64 bit Toshiba A665). Same problem - purple bar at top and frozen system at shutdown. The thread above indicates the problem is back - does this mean there is no resolution yet? Will this continue after I upgrade to 12.04 or 12.10?
