Bug Description

hi Developers,

I don't know, why you did this, but through the update at about 23:55 CET, you removed the proprietary nvidia-driver nvidia-current-updates and since then, this package has unmet dependencies!!

Error-message as follows:

nvidia-current-updates:
 Hängt ab von: xorg-video-abi-11
Empfiehlt: nvidia-settings-updates (>=302.17), aber es wird 295.33-0ubuntu1 installiert

english:

nvidia-current-updates
  depends on: xorg-video-abi-11
suggests: nvidia-settings-updates (>=302.17), but 295.33-0ubuntu1 shall be installed!! This bug is critical !!!

This bug still continues!! I also checked the dependencies of nvidia-settings-current-updates. These seem to be OK, because this package installs. But why can't I install the proprietary nvidia-driver??

I also refreshed synaptic this morning to see, if this still continues and no change until up to now. The package nvidia-current-updates still clames unmet dependencies!!

This bug is critical!!

The Xserver in Ubuntu Quantal/12.10 was recently updated from 1.11 to 1.12
That is the most likely cause of this bug (assuming you're using quantal).

As Dave points out, the real problem is not that there are unmet dependencies for the current package, but that the 302.17 package needs to be recompiled against the new X ABI. It's a bit confusing for users though, since the current package is relatively new.

hi 3vi1,

thanks for your posting. But yesterday evening, situation grew really worse for me, because my graphiccard was near to an overhaeat because I had to switch over to nouveau. I also made nomodeset permanent. But this did not change, that my graphiccard nearly got too hot. So I had to turn away from Ubuntu 12.10, which I used until yesterday evening.

Now I use LuninX OS, which is based on Ubuntu Precise, because there, the propreatory nvidia-driver works again for me.

But: I will return back as soon as this new recompiling will be in the repos!! Can you tell me, when this will be?? Is there already an appointment to see??

I'm in a very similar boat myself, actually. I too am just an alpha tester here, and this has pretty much put the kibosh to most of my Quantal usage for the moment. Nouveau doesn't work too well with my GTX560Ti (It will only came up in lower resolutions that don't match my monitor) on my main system.

But I would expect this problem will affect a *large* percentage of the Quantal testers and developers (especially over the weekend as people reboot after upgrading X), so there will probably be new nvidia-current/nvidia-current-updates packages post-haste.

If you're really stuck, you can workaround the problem like I just did:

I manually grabbed the 302.17 nvidia-current and nvidia-current-dev from the xorg-edgers ppa here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/2512683/+listing-archive-extra, and manually installed them with dpkg -i.

I knew the packages in the edgers ppa would have to be compiled against the newer xorg to work. :)

I tried that already,
but all I get is this message, unmet dependencies and problems with this
abi-11-package!!
it says, it's not installable. I had activated this ppa-repository before,
because I also
had thought about this as a way out...
I also refreshed Synaptic, but this did also not help anything...

I'm pretty sure you can download and install the nvidia driver from nvidia's site if you can't wait for a proper package. It's defintely not ideal, but at least nvidia has support for Xserver 1.12 already.

Does anybody know, when this thing will be fixed?? I would like to return back to Ubuntu 12.10! So it would be nice, if this thing would be solved until Beta-state of Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal.

Sounds like this probably was fixed here:

nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates (302.17-0ubuntu2) quantal; urgency=low

  * Rebuild against the new xserver abi.

We're up to 304.32-0ubuntu6 in quantal now.

hi Bryce,

today i tryed to upgrade one of my machines here from LinuxMint 13 to LinuxMint 14 and: the same thing again. Again Synaptic put up a message, that nvidia-current-updates would not be installable, because of this abi-package. It again told about dependency-problems.

So it seems, this bug is not fixed and the next days, I will test Ubuntu again, if it also happens there. If yes, then I will return back here. So this bug seems not to be fixed.
