We do anticipate getting one more -nvidia release prior to Precise shipping, and hope that will include an updated -173. Maybe we'll get -96 too but hard to say; that appears to get attention less frequently, so we might have to drop it.

In any case, I think we should wait on dropping these until closer to final freeze, so we can see what NVIDIA puts out.

Is it possible for us to toggle off -173 and -96 from being shown in jockey until we think it'll work? Might help quell some of the bug reports we get.

That already happens. In one of the previous cycles I changed Jockey
to compare the xorg-video-abi-* between the server and the driver, and
only show a driver if they match.

Hi guys, I have a solution for you (a painless workaround)
nvidia-173 drivers are not compatible with Xorg (ABI to be precise) version released in 12.04.
So I stick with 11.10 version of Xorg. I had to make the following changes to backport Xorg:

In /etc/apt/sources.list :

deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main
deb-src http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main

In /etc/apt/preferences:

Package: xserver-xorg*
Pin: release a=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 1050

Note related to nvidia-173 on Ubuntu 12.04:
I'm using old hardware with nvidia-173 drivers and I don't like the fact "composite" is mandatory to use Unity correctly (very laggy) I had to force composite to switch it "off" to avoid laggy windows by modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Forgot to mention that you need to run a "sudo apt-get update" and a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" in order to downgrade Xorg to the version from Oneiric (11.10)
Xorg is independent, so there is no conflict with any package from the rest of 12.04 release.
Enjoy.

notice it is a workaround, the performance on the nouveau drivers might not be good.

Ubuntu can't fix this, nvidia should do that.

In Natty the 96 package never got updated post-release even when nvidia released compatible driver. PLEASE do update the Precise package whenever a compatible driver turns up.

Also the Precise 173 driver is outdated. 173.14.31 has been released by nvidia. Arch Linux already has this driver and it seems to be compatible with recent software.

If you have an FX 5500 you can run 12.04 LTS only in the Unity 2D mode.
FX 5500 is to old, so the only thing you can do is to buy newer video card with a minimum of 512 MB.
Also you can try a lighter version of Ubuntu, for instance Xubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Regarding the workaround in response #13: My GeForce Go 7300 card is now able to run Unity 3d with nvidia-current and the change to /etc/environment from the comment. So it may not be necessary to switch to the nouveau driver, at least for this card, and it may not be necessary to use the 173 driver. I'm not sure when the last time was that I could use nvidia-current -- I have been having to use 173 for several releases now. Not sure yet what performance will be like, but so far so good.

Quote from #15 "We're working on new ABI support for legacy branches right now; we're very sorry for the delays, we've been very busy with other stuff."
So there is still hope that updated drivers will be made available by Nvidia.

For the time being, In my opinion it would have been necessary to put a warning into the release notes of Ubuntu 12.04.

I've got a slow computer and during the upgrade I by chance even saw the text "removing nvidia-96" scrolling by, but at that moment it was already far too late to think about staying on Oneiric.

I have a GeForce Go N11 video card, and after upgrading to 12.04 my screen is about 2/3 of what it used to be.
I tried to increase the resolution, but it did not work.
I checked and I am using the nouveau driver. There are no other drivers available.
I guess this is all related to this bug. Does that sound correct? Thanks.

@Nicolas #7 / #8 Thank you, the downgrade worked fine - while I waited for my new graphics card to arrive... The NZ$80 card (NVIDIA GT 520) arrived the next day. I removed the oneiric source and pin again, reran update/dist-upgrade and then installed nvidia-current. All working now.

@Timo #9 What's "silly and dangerous" is not mentioning a showstopper in the release notes. Esp. when it is being described as "well known".

Daniel Cantarín (omega-canta) wrote :

Since upgrading to 12.04 (from 10.04), my system is unstable. Graphics drivers seems to be the problem, as it's stable without nvidia drivers loaded.
Drivers version 173 worked fine for my GeForce 9800 GT during the last years (with the exception of not letting me test WebGL on Firefox).

I'm a developer, so i needed to check WebGL. For that reason i installed some new drivers version directly from nvidia a few months ago on my 10.04 installation (can't remember the version number). Eventually had to go back to 173 (from repos).
That's the reason i don't want to download drivers from nvidia site again.

So, today i tried to install the debian's version of 173.14.35: http://packages.debian.org/sid/xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-legacy-173xx

Had to add "http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main non-free" and "http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main contrib" to "/etc/apt/sources.list".
This gave me some trouble with packages and versions: even had to uninstall "nvidia-current", and therefore "ubuntu-desktop". I did all this on root's recovery console.
By some magic, after restarting everything was working; even unity 3d and compiz. So i commented those repos in "sources.list", and reinstalled everything removed in the process (aptitude removed a lot of packages linked to wine, so i did "apt-get install wine" and the came back).
However, things eventually became very unstable: on some restarts there was no 3d subsystem (no unity, no d3d on wine), some other tries the compiz unity plugin reported crashes, and so on.

Right now i'm removing everything regarding that 173.14.35-1 version, and sticking to nvidia-current from x-swat ppa. I'll wait until we have an ubuntu package for ".35".
But if everything keeps this unstable, i'll have no other choice but to go away from ubuntu and try other distros. (I'd hate to, but unfortunatelly it's giving me an unacceptable instability for a workstation).

Personally I have solved this issue by getting a newever nvidia card however I wanted to try and help you guys out, dkms automatically builds and rebuilds kernel modules when it detects a change in kernel, which means when you install a new kernel from the repo, when you boot up it will take a couple of minutes or so longer because it is automatically compiling the new nvidia driver.
So I had a poke about with making dkms work for the new 173 driver and here is what I did maybe someone can get this working and post it as a guide for others to use:

cd ~/Downloads

wget ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.35/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run

chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1.run -x

cd ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1/usr/src/nv

gedit ./dkms.conf

Paste in this crap:

PACKAGE_NAME="nvidia-173"
PACKAGE_VERSION="173.14.35"
CLEAN="make clean"
BUILT_MODULE_NAME[0]="nvidia"
DEST_MODULE_NAME[0]="nvidia_173"
MAKE[0]="make module KERNDIR=/lib/modules/$kernelver IGNORE_XEN_PRESENCE=1 IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1 SYSSRC=$kernel_source_dir LD=/usr/bin/ld.bfd"
DEST_MODULE_LOCATION[0]="/kernel/drivers/char/drm"
AUTOINSTALL="yes"

Save and exit

sudo dkms add ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.35-pkg1/usr/src/nv

Check to see /usr/src/nvidia-173-173.14.35 exists

sudo dkms build nvidia-173/173.14.35

This is where it fails if this had work the next step would probably be:

sudo dkms install nvidia-173/173.14.35

Since I don't have an older card any more I don't have the necessary drive to follow through on this but I'm sure some of you guys still hit by the bug do, so go make it work and post the solution!

Michael:
thank you very much for the explanation. Since yesterday, after installing the last nvidia-current version from x-swat ppa, i didn't suffered any reboot or hang yet. But if the symptoms come back, i'll try the method you posted here (and, of course, post the results).

[offtopic]

On the other hand, i'd like to say something about your suggestion on upgrading: NO.
That's exactly the kind of things Wintel did to every one of us during the last two decades, and is not the answer.
There was no problem with 173 drivers, there's no problem with the hardware, the problem lies in the distribution changes.

I don't pretend to be naggy here: i love Ubuntu, love gnu/linux, and it dramatically changed my life for good (as a developer) when it gave me the chance to go away from Microsoft. So i'm grateful, and now i tell everyone to get into FLOOS and the community-made software world. That's the reason i can't stand before your recomendation of changing the video card, and of course then the motherboard, which also implies almost everytime a new processor, sometimes new ram, not to mention the rest of the "legacy" peripherals, because of a package dependency problem.

The hardware is fine, the distro runs fine on it, it's just a package change what's bringing all the buzz here. I have a GeForce 9800 GT, 512 MB DDR3, PCIE, and can't install the driver that always worked for me because of that "xorg-video-abi-10" package.
(To be fair, NVidia always had A LOT of trouble, and responsability, regarding graphic cards drivers: anyone tried TNT2 on Win2k?)

What i would like is to get the ability to change my current video driver using "jockey-gtk". That is: selecting 173 for stability, and selecting 295 for new technologies testing purposes. Much more than changing the hardware, i would check for some hack to tell 173 that "abi-10" is installed even when it's not, and tell it then to use whatever other package is out there replacing "abi-10".
Of course, that would be a lot of work. But the consequences are: a lot of people does not need to buy a new PC.

[/offtopic]

Anyway, i'm sure that sooner or later we'll have a 173.14.35 package on ubuntu repos, and #948053 will at last be closed. I'll be patient a few months.

Hi Patola, I'm running a notebook that uses a Pentium-M processor
(necessitates the non-PAE kernel) and an nVidia Geforce4 Ti 4200 Go (AGP
8X) video card. I've been using Ubuntu 32-bit on this notebook since Dapper
Drake, and the last Live-CD that would run properly on this computer was
8.04.4. Hardy Heron used the nv driver to support this video card, but
Ubuntu has replaced nv with nouveau which does not support this video card.
I am currently running xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.4-1ubuntu4 (from Oneiric)
to be able to use nvidia-96.43.20ubuntu6 which is based on the latest
available -96 driver from nVidia. This is because nvidia-96 is not yet ABI
compatible with x.org ABI 11 or newer. I hope that clarifies my situation
as it applies to nvidia-96. I also look forward to nVidia bringing out
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.21 to support the newer ABI's.

I have been following this thread for about a month and thought I'd offer what I did to get 3d acceleration working. (NOT USING NVIDIA-173) I myself have a: NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1) and the drivers that were included with the default install were the: Nouveau drivers and they were dog slow.

However, Ubuntu also has the DRI experimental package: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental and that made performance comparable to the Nvidia binary drivers. (For my card; in this one instance.) So if you want to give it a try:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental

Then reboot and see how well it works for you.

173, i.e version...30, not ...35.

nvidia-173 (173.14.30-0ubuntu11) [restricted] NVIDIA binary Xorg

nvidia-173-updates-dev (173.14.30-0ubuntu7) [restricted] NVIDIA binary

Am I looking in the wrong place or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks for any pointers.

SRU request:

nvidia-graphics-drivers-173-updates and nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 (173.14.35-0ubuntu0.1) are in precise-proposed. They update the legacy driver so that it works again with the Xserver in Precise. No regressions are expected as the driver couldn't even be installed before.

I tried downloading the nvidia-graphcis-drivers-173-updates deb and installing with dpkg, which installed fine. I activated the driver in additional drivers and rebooted but I ended up with a 640x480 resolution. And that's where I'm stuck.

Any help or instructions would be appreciated.

With the updates in precise-proposed, does this mean that the suggested means of installing the nvidia-173 (or nvidia-96) packages will be via "Additional Drivers" in the near future? It sounds like manual driver installation from NVidia is already compatible with the precise xserver-xorg-core package, but I'm happy to wait a bit if there is a smoother option to be deployed soon.

Is there a way we could test out the packages in precise-proposed (is that from the milestone-propsed PPA?) and provide feedback (if that would be helpful)?

Did you mean for me to do 'ubuntu-bug nvidia-173'? Doing 'ubuntu-bug nvidia-graphics-drivers-173' gives me a package does not exist error message. I'm on an Nvidia FX 5500 256Mb.

However, package nvidia-173 from ubuntu-proposed is installable and working, so I think this bug is solved :-)

I have not experienced any particular problems with Ubuntu or Ubuntu 2D using this driver.

However, I have experienced two issues which cause a minor concern for me.

If I scroll quickly enough, I have a diagonal 'line' which runs on my monitor from its "northwest" to its "southeast" corner. It's not really a line per se, rather the illusion of a line, as it appears that one half of the screen is refreshing "before" the other half. I am assuming for now that this is more to do with my refresh rate, but I must say that I did not experience this on the same computer two months ago when I was running Windows XP.

Additionally, on shutdown I no longer see an account of the computer's "final processes" in the terminal, or whatever was previously displayed. Instead, I get a distorted image of my desktop background (which is currently set to rotate through the default desktops).

Aside from this however, it does appear that the card is functioning correctly, and applications which used to drag due to graphic content (i.e, Software Center) are now quite visibly faster and more responsive.

I'm currently at work and away from the computer I'm using Ubuntu on, and I'd like to provide more comprehensive details if they are warranted. Please advise. :)

I have a GeForce MX 4000 that worked fine in 11.10 but now doesn't, and the 173 drivers don't work with it. I know it's an old card, but sourcing AGP cards is getting hard! I'd rather keep this computer working as long as I can, even if that means dropping down to 11.10. Could there be an official backport path of some sort for getting a still-compatible version of Xorg installed on 12.04 if the driver is unlikely to be updated?

Ditching a motherboard & GPU for a new release of X doesn't seem like a stellar solution to the problem.

Currently I'm installing from the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run, but it's a PITA rebuilding it every time a new proposed kernel comes out. I've not tried the Debian version (yet).

Hello Jean-Baptiste, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nvidia-graphics-drivers-96 into precise-proposed. The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-96/96.43.23-0ubuntu0.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

Hi Johannes, I tried your tip, not forgetting to chmod +x
It didn't worked neither for suspend nor hibernate, but at least I can see briefly on resume/thaw the console login screen.
pm-suspend.log doesn't seem to report any error when the wake-up fails.
When disabling your script (chmod -x), closing X session then issuing pm-suspend or pm-hibernate from console, both work fine (although no password is asked at wake-up, I get the console session opened), but switching Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings back to black screen, reverting to console impossible and Alt+PrtScn+K ineffective. Sometimes Alt+PrtScn+B reboots the laptop, sometimes not.
I wouldn't like to pollute more this thread. Should I post a new bug? And for which package pm/kelnel/xorg/video?
Thank you

Hello,

does anyone know whether it is safe for now (and the future) to update xserver-xorg and its dependencies to the newest versions without breaking compatibility with the nvidia-96 branch of gfx drivers?
I am so happy that I was able to make my old NV18 gpu running on a fresh install of LTS 12.04 Lubuntu after I experienced mysterious graphical glitches and severe system slowdowns with nouveau driver modules when I gave Lubuntu 12.10 a try.

It took me hours and hours of troubleshooting to find out, that the lack of support for legacy nvidia gpus was causing the hassle in the first place.
And now I am afraid of breaking the running system again with an update of the xserver, that is, if i got it right, on the brink to be updated to a new (and yet unsupported?!) ABI version.

What would you experts suggest? Fix a certain xserver version?

Thank you very much, especially those who helped to make nvidia-96 drivers working in 12.x releases!

easy to answer:

Has NO support for XOrg-Server ABI 1.13 (which is the latest (lts-quantal)).

This is not a help Forum - it's for bugreporting. It's focusized on bugreporting and fixing.

Join in the discussion on the Nvidia-support forums.

I'm not an expert... :-) But it's time to make some thoughts about getting newer HW, i.e. The Nvidia 6200 (new or used), which fits in a AGP-slot is supported by the legacy driver 304. There is also a GT610 for the PCI-slot - but is worth to invest money in a energy consuming oldie?

Or stick with 12.04 LTS with 5 Years of support - enjoy the bug- and security fixes – +save some money over the time - take it when the LTS support ends and build yourself a newer system. Carefully selecting the components as the mobo. Which preferably has a multicore CPU to fit in & make a 64-bit version installable... AND a PCI-e slot for the graphics-card. So you could make some use of VDPAU or even CUDA (if needed). If u have some $$$ left, add a SSD ;_)

Every hardware has it's breakpoint (in terms of EOL of producers-support). AND YES it's great to have this supported in 12.04.2 – Thanks to the dev's!

Glad to see that Ubuntu is innovative.

My experience in a nutshell (using Kubuntu):
- I have an old machine with a GeForce FX 5200, which was working great with natty and the proprietary nvidia-173 driver, manually installed
- I don't care about 3D and effects, but watching movies with nouveau I had some annoying flickering horizontal lines
- after upgrading to precise I restored nouveau as the proprietary driver compalined about a missing file in /lib
- installing nvidia-173 (173.14.39-0ubuntu0.0.1) using Applications -> System -> Additional Drivers (Jockey) solved the issue for me.

In short, you can use GeForce FX 5200 with nvidia-173 in Kubuntu Precise
