Bug Description

I installed the restricted Nvidia drivers 96 with the restricted drivers
manager. After a reboot, the boot output says Loading Nvidia Module [FAILED].
I get dropped to a shell because X server fails to start.

Try looking at your packages. The driver package may show up as broken, or give you some info in a terminal similar to what you see on the linked bug.

Response #9 on bug 391768 gives a ppa that provides properly updated nvidia 96 drivers. Worked on my athlon classic, at least. Give that a try. Granted, it appears that the powers that be are taking considerable time to work the fix into the main repositories, but at least a workable solution has been provided.
