Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I had Ubuntu 8.04 and Open Office worked with no problems. I upgraded to 8.1. Now when I start Open Office (all applications) the text in the top line of the menus toolbars appears as straight lines. Also text in drop down boxes does not show. Symbols are OK, text can be typed into work areas but the text in the tool bar area does not show. This problem has been reported at Open Office but the suggested solutions haven't worked for me. I have tried removing Open Office using Synaptic Manager and reinstalling but that didn't work either.

I have tried other office suites eg KOffice but the same problem occurs

Thanks Peter, but when there is no text visible in the menus, you don't know where to go to change the font!

I have solved the problem by removing Nvidia96 via Synaptic Package Manager (NVidia as the problem was suggested elsewhere) . When I restarted my computer a message box popped up advising that my graphics were low resolution (haven't got the exact wording) and offered options including restoring default setting. I did this and restarted and everything is back to normal.

Hi pandrcope,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

This problem was resolved by disabling Nvidia 96

Had similar issue, text on drop down menus and buttons was randomly invisible when sliding mouse over them. For me problem was solved by disabling desktop effects completely. I have nvidia graphic card too.
