linux-modules-nvidia-* is not automatically installed; no working kernel module

After installing and uninstalling Nvidia drivers once or twice, they stop functioning completely. Seems nvidia.ko is no longer installed, and linux-modules-nvidia-* needs to be manually installed.

Hmm now 470 is failing with the same problem. I think my installation is broken in some other way.

I fixed it by purging all nvidia-related packages and rebooting. After that, Nvidia drivers installed correctly again.

Maybe it's bug 1975650 which I've seen other people reporting for some time.

Just ran into this again. The solution was to:

  sudo apt install linux-modules-nvidia-535-`uname -r`
