With the above the only working audio is via HDMI. It doesn't matter if the monitor is plugged or not. It completely breaks the audio on the laptop, built-in speakers and headphones stop working.

However, if I modify

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add the following two lines:

options snd-hda-intel model=generic
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0x1

I get the headphones to work. The built-in speakers will still fail.

There is definitely something with the NVIDIA drivers install that breaks the audio. Uninstalling keep the setup broken.
