Bug Description

when I start computer it sometimes remain stuck in starting procedure showing it instead of loading screen. Gnome will not start. Commands does not work at least on this console. I have to force restart computer. Another time the starting procedure shows, but is overtaken afterwards by standard loading screen which is little stretched to sides. It started appering after migrating from novaeu to Nvidias driver.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Your description indicates the issue started after swapping from the nouveau driver to an nvidia driver; which implies to me it's more an issue related to the nvidia driver itself.

Why do you think it's related to Xorg? Have you returned to using the nouveau driver and the problem remained? or what am I missing?

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → xorg-server (Ubuntu)

I could not use Other option in Apport becouse of choose package error (ubuntu-bug) and this was the closest. To revert do I just uninstall the envidia driver? I wanted to post the bug as soon as possible. Do not know the drivers name.

Try this as a workaround: edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the line:

   #WaylandEnable=false

Then reboot. If that works then this is a duplicate of bug 1798790.

OK. Please:

1. Reproduce the problem again (the new black screen problem).

2. Reboot and as soon as the purple screen appears, tap Escape. Look through the menus and find recovery mode. Select it and boot recovery mode.

3. In a terminal or VT (Ctrl+Alt+F4), run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and send us the file 'prevboot.txt'.

It appears your laptop only has an Nvidia GPU. Although an Intel GPU should be present, it's not detected. Most likely disabled in the BIOS. That should be OK...

Also your Xorg log is reporting that the Nvidia driver has successfully detected the internal display, which is 1920x1080 and is an LCD panel manufactured by Chimei.

Your 'prewboot2.txt' seems to suggest maybe the remaining problem is just that Ubuntu doesn't know how to properly control the display backlight.

Please run this command:

  find /sys/class/backlight/ > backlights.txt

and send us the file 'backlights.txt'.

Thanks.

It appears this is a problem in the Nvidia driver only. But instead of waiting for a fix for that, you might want to try forcing the integrated GPU (Intel GPU) to be enabled (the Linux kernel can't see it right now). Hopefully you can find an option for that in your system BIOS?...
