nvidia-361 Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.4.0-16-generic (x86_64)

Installing the nvidia-361 driver module produces this error
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.4.0-16-generic (x86_64) in the terminal.
The file /var/crash/nvidia-361.0.crash is attached below. this is after doing a apt-get purge nvidia* then reinstalling with apt-get install nvidia-361. The same happens with nvidia-361-updates.

is the actually error that apt-get prints out, but the make.log has more info.

I had cc and c++ (via update-alternatives --config ) pointing to clang which was causing the issues.
