NVIDIA VER 340.107 crashes steam

NVIDIA binary driver VER 340.17 is crashing steam. If I purge all NVIDIA drivers Steam runs successfully from Nouveau, but seems to have performance issues in game. Steam support was unhelpful and referred me to anyone else.
