Same error, happened to me while updating software, which included the kernel update 4.15.0-24. I had (and have till I reboot) version 4.13.0-45.

I had a similar issue a while ago, also related to updating the kernel, which rendered the Nvidia driver unusable for a few days until the driver was updated for the new kernel version (bug link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-340/+bug/1741671).

Quadro FX880M.

When I reboot, the issue is the same as on the previous occasion - Only a black screen shows up with a blinking cursor, no login screen. Solution posted in the linked issue works for this issue too - Choose Advanced Options in GRUB and boot with an older kernel version (4.13.0-45 for me). I proceeded to remove the new kernel version until the issue is fixed.

After last update, therre an issue with NVIDIA 340 drivers, and screen is in low resolution. This is the second time this happens after kernel update using Ubuntu 16.04.

For some reason I get this error also with kernel 4.4.0-134-generic thought I have Hardware enablement stack installed. So maybe I have to remove HWE to be able to use the Nvidia driver again.

I had the same problem, install the drivers with the command:
sudo drivers autoinstall
sudo reboot
then when you start it remains on the black screen.

I have a nvidia video card Geforce GT-9500 ZOTAC
The nvidia-340 package was installed but apparently does not work.

Solution:
Enter via SSH from another device and uninstall the nvidia drivers:
sudo apt purge nvidia *
sudo reboot

Then they can access normally.
