Bug Description

Laptop: DELL Inspiron 3000 Series I14-3442-A40 (Core i5)

GPU: Nvidia 820M (2GB 64 bits)

Nvidia Driver: 331.38

Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release: 14.04

Problem: My GPU temperature is reaching 90-93 degrees Celsius (°C) and the fan is always operating in the maximum rpm

If I change to the Intel integrated graphics the problem doesn't happen and the processor operates in 62 degrees Celsius (°C)

After noting this behavior my Ubuntu was updated. The NVIDIA Driver now is 331.113. I'm playing now and my temperature is 88 degrees Celsius (°C).

What you expected to happen:

A temperature between 75 and 80 degrees Celsius (°C)

What happened instead

A temperature between 88 and 93 degrees Celsius (°C)

I've updated my BIOS to A05 following the procedure "Upgrading with a FreeDOS USB drive" that can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DellBIOS. The update process worked like a charm.

After update the BIOS, I ran some tests on the same game. The temperature is ranging from 83 to 86 with the peak at 91 degrees Celsius (°C).

I cannot say (yet) if the BIOS update has decrease the temperature, because (as you can see on the description of this bug) I did an nvidia driver upgrade that helped the temperature to decrease.

In other words, I need to perform more tests to check if the BIOS update has helped or not. I'm working now, but this night I'll perform more tests.

Thanks for the help and the fast answer. :-)

Unfortunately the problem is not resolved after BIOS upgrade. As you can see on the attached image the temperature GPU reaches 91C after start the game.

Hello Cristopher, In my opinion, the detected behavior has not changed after updating the BIOS and nvidia driver. Thanks for your help.

Luiz Cantoni, just to clarify, was the temperature in a more preferred range with:
1) A version of the NVIDIA proprietary driver prior to 331.38?
2) A release of Ubuntu prior to 14.04?

Cristopher,

1) A version of the NVIDIA proprietary driver prior to 331.38?

I didn't run a version prior to 331.38. I'm running the 331.113 and the behavior is the same as 331.38.

2) A release of Ubuntu prior to 14.04?

I didn't run other Ubuntu version in this laptop. I bought with Windows 8.1 but replace to an SSD HD with Ubuntu 14.04 already installed (I used this SSD in other laptop without dedicated GPU).

Thanks for your help.
