During build:

which is interesting because other similar bug reports don't explicitly show anything crashing.

This problem also affects Ubuntu 14.04 AMD 64.
I recently upgraded the kernel to 3.13.0-45.
Nvidia module is not built: there is no /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-331/331.113/3.13.0-45-generic.
No errors reported in the apt logs.
As a result the desktop screen is blank.

Changed in nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → High

Here is a work-around which fixed the issue for me:
1. In the stable version (in my case Ubuntu 14.04 AMD 64 kernel 3.13.0-44), open Additional Drivers then select the X.Org X server Nouveau display driver.
2. Allow the setup to complete. Reboot system. Confirm driver is working.
3. Reboot into troublesome kernel version (in my case 3.13.0-45). If Nouveau driver is working ok, open Additional Drivers then select Nvidia proprietary, tested. Allow that to install, takes a few minutes.
4. Reboot system. Nvidia driver should be working again. At least that works for me, although no guarantees on other versions....
5. Today I installed the update to kernel 3.13.0.46 and Nvidia driver is working fine again.

Why has this remained unassigned since December? My dual display is now a single display and settings can't see the other display. I have been plagued by this issue for over a year. It has crashed my system a number of times. Wouldn't you think that Canonical could clean this up quickly. I am disgusted with their lack of concern.
