nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 - 12.04.4 to HWE 3.13 - failed kernel module load

Upon running the update for HWE for 12.04.4-54 - kernel now loading 3.13 - and nvidia driver not loading because of missing symbols and hardware information in the HWE and kernel. Apparently the HWE does not support Nvidia drivers. Please provide a kernel update and a temp workaround to provide Xserver and graphics capability. My workstation is now really unusable as everything I do pretty much depends upon a running xserver with the high end graphics. Update-manager gives an incomplete (empty) answer. update-manager-status gives Aug 2017-so up to date. BUt kernel fails to load nvidia driver 173.
