Bug Description

1. Ubuntu 13.10
2. N: Unable to locate package nvidia-graphics-drivers-319
3. I expected that when I changed the brightness level for my laptop monitor that the brightness would also change.
4. Instead, the brightness always stays at 100%

I have tried every configuration of grub that I have seen online or been asked to try on freenode.net #ubuntu by 3 different people. Nothing seems to fix this problem. The file for the brightness is always updated but it is like the driver never tells the hardware to change the brightness.

I have tried Tried :
acpi_backlight=vendor
pcie_aspm=force
acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'

Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"

echo 50 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
echo 50 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video1/brightness
echo 50 > /sys/class/backlight/asus/brightness

nothing seems to work (the files are of course updated but the monitor rests at 100% brightness)

I have also tried the XOrg-server and nvidia-304 drivers. They all have the same result, nothing.

Hello,

I have Asus R510L with Nvidia GeForce 840M and the problem exists. I use Ubuntu 14.04 and Unity.
1) I cannot modify brightness using Fn keys.
2) I also cannot change brightness using "System Settings" -> "Brightness and lock" -> "Brightness" slider

Hello, now it is possible for me to control the brightness via "System Settings" -> Brightness and lock" -> "Brightness" slider!

But the fn button still not work (except once a time with the kernel parameter "acpi_osi=" until to the next reboot).

Since Autum it works over die Brightness slider, but i don't no why... maybe due to the newer nvidia driver (331.38 -> 331.113)...

Hello,

I can also confirm that on Asus R510L with Nvidia GeForce 840M I can change brightness via "System Settings" -> Brightness and lock" -> "Brightness" slider.

Slider works on Ubuntu 14.04:
- kernel 3.13.0-43-generic #72-Ubuntu
- nvidia driver nvidia-331-updates 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4

But I cannot change brightness using the fn keys.

Regards,

PS.
Maybe now it is a prolem reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1400068 ?

Hello, thanks for your report!

Due to your link, i have testet die "acpi_osi= " parameter again and against my first description (i was able to adjust die brightness via fn keys once a time #9) the brightness stand still on 100%, but the difference to other parameters is that the notification daemon show me the reaction.

The problem is may a clash between backlight providers ... https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81762 (Comment 6).

Here i found more information about two patches https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70241 (Comment 94,92).

But it seems there is no proper solution for me so far ... :(

patrice
