Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu 10.04 My system will completely freeze except for the mouse under certain situations. It will freeze when i start virtual box Just the program, not the actual virtual machine) , but not every time. if i open and close it enough times, it will freeze without opening the program. If it does open OK I can click on settings in vbox and it will freeze there also. Opening system->preferences-> screensaver and trying to choose different screensavers will invoke the freeze also. Here is the weird part. If i don't move the mouse to another screen, after about 3 or 4 minutes, vbox or the screensaver will finally show up. But if i move the mouse pointer to another screen (3 monitors) while the screen is frozen, the mouse flickers between all three screens and the machine 'hardlocks' and have to use the power button and reboot. I can still ping the machine while it is frozen. I have reinstalled 4 times and it has happed with all 4 installs. This type of freeze never happed on all previous versions of Ubuntu since 8.04, same hardware. This is a show stopping bug for me, and have been using ubuntu since 8.04. It is hard enough getting it to work with the fake raid and 2 vid cards i have without this crash to deal with also.

Ok on the occasions that I don't move the mouse and the machine comes back, it acts like the whole file system is read only, i cant copy or create any files, it says directory is read only. This is the most recent entry in my kern.log and the problem is happening right now, so this may be related.

Don't be so sure this is Nvidia's fault, because I am using Sabyon and it uses kernel 2.26.34 and haven't had a single freeze yet. I tried upgrading Ubuntu with x-updates repository to use nvidia 195.36.24 and experienced the same problems. I tried Fedora 13 (kernel 2.26.33, nvidia 195.36.24) same exact freeze. Sabayon 5.3 (kernel 2.26.34, nvidia 195.36.24) has not had a single lockup. I used ubuntu 8.04, 9.04, 9.10 on this same hardware with no problems also.
