This problem looks to be related to the nvidia drivers.
I think it's because nvidia can't detect the right resolution for the monitor. And unfortunately forcing a resolution in ubuntu or any linux dist for that matter is not easy to say the least...

Running latest ubuntu here (9.10).

I have this issue on my Acer Extensa 5635G. Looking at the Xorg.0.log, it seems that the proper mode of 1366x768 at 60Hz is being discarded with this motivation:

Mode is rejected: This mode's horizontal sync end (1446) exceeds the horizontal total size (1437).

After some experimentation, the fix (on my machine) was easy. Attached is my entire xorg.conf, the important line of which is the ModeValidation option. This disables the specific check that failed above. See the documentation for the nVidia driver for details.

Note that I'm running driver version 190.42, but considering the nature of the problem, this may well apply to the older version pulled in by Jockey.

I don't understand how to do camillas fix. (I'm also a total ubuntu newbie). What shall I do with the xorg.conf file downloaded from here? How do I attach it?
Thanks
Daniel

@Daniel Wejse,

You should open your xorg.conf file, not the one that you downloaded. It's usually in the /etc/X11 folder. Do these steps:

Open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type the following commands:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now, in the editor window, find the following text:

Driver "nvidia"

and add the following line between the Option "No Logo" "True" and the End Section lines:

Option "ModeValidation" "NoTotalSizeCheck"

Now save the file and reboot.

If you have any problems you can revert this by opening a terminal and executing

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and rebooting again.

BTW, this solution worked for me as well. I own an Acer Extensa 5635ZG, thanks Camilla!!
