Bug Description

I am not sure how to file this, or what additional information might be helpful, if you have something you'd like to see, let me know where it is or how to get the info and I'll happily provide it.

I've been running Karmic on my laptop (Since alpha 6), which has a nvidia video card. I had encountered no problems, until I decided to enable the nvidia drivers using the hardware drivers launcher from the menu. (Chose the recommended option, I believe it was something like 183?).

Upon reboot, the desktop appears to start up fine, but many things do not work as they should now.
Examples:
1) If i click and drag on the desktop, I do not get any selection indication
2) Clicking GNOME application menu opens the menu, but they open with a flicker (looks almost like it is trying to fade in, but runs like 2 fps), and expand extremely slowly.
3) Most widgets inside windows will not gain focus (i can't type into a terminal window) but I can click exit buttons etc.

I will happily help track down this issue if someone can walk me through what they need. It is also worth noting that I have run effects with no problem on the machine in previous releases, in case that is relevant.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 436695

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
