I just changed the card with an older GeForce 8500GT/PCI/SSE2 and it works much better without any nvidia drivers with 9.04 than with the FX220.

Activation now appears in the "Hardware Drivers" (does not appear with the FX220 installed), but activation causes the system not to start properly with either card installed - similar than the error described above. Replacing the standard xorg.conf with another now allows at least normal resulutions; but no 3D without drivers of course.

The FX220 only allow 640x320 & 800x600. The system is a Medion Akoya E7330 D.

I have a clue (perhaps).

Looking in /lib/modules, there is NO file named nvidia.ko... which is present on my older, Jaunty system.

Surely the nvidia 185 driver deb file should install a kernel module?

Indeed, recovering all of the nvidia-185* files from /var/cache/apt/ and dpkg-deb -x 'ing them reveals no kernel module.

There are build files in the kernel-source, but they don't appear to be installed.

Perhaps a script isn't getting triggered in one of these packages?

It sounds like for whatever reason, the driver failed to build properly (perhaps bug 450493 or bug 434154 but could be anything) and jockey did not propagate the error up (bug 451305) and set nvidia up to boot. Since it failed to build, it fails to boot. Unfortunately the logs for the boot failure don't explain the build failure.

I think it is likely each person on this bug report may be having a separate issue, so I would ask everyone but stevie to file a separate bug report.

Stevie, are you still experiencing the issue? If so, can you attach your jockey, apt, and dpkg log files? You can find them in /var/log.

Thank you for seeking to improve Ubuntu. It seems you have filed a bug
against X using the new System Testing utility. Unfortunately, this tool
is filing bugs without collecting sufficient information to properly
diagnose the issues. I wish we could reply to every report to guide you
to gather the correct information, but it happens that so many people
are using this testing feature to file bug reports that we simply cannot
keep up with the influx. I'm replying in bulk so I can get everyone
pointed into a direction most likely to result in getting you a useful
workaround and us a complete bug report that can be solved.

Most of these problems describe issues that have documented
troubleshooting procedures, so perhaps the most helpful thing I can
do is point you to them:

  http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting

These guides explain why things break the way they do, and in some cases
provide workarounds.

I would ask that you first go through the appropriate guide for your
problem, particularly if you are having problems with resolution,
crashes, fonts, or blank screen issues, and then file a bug report using
the following command:

   ubuntu-bug xorg

This collects more detailed information than the System Testing tool
does. Please also write a detailed explanation, indicating when you
first discovered the problem, analysis steps you've done, workarounds
that work, and so on.

Or, if you suspect the problem has something to do with the way the test
script itself is working (such as if Ubuntu worked fine until you ran
the script), then file the bug against the test suite:

   ubuntu-bug checkbox

Thanks again, and good luck!

Sorry, even though this was filed through system testing there is almost all the info necessary on this one. It sounds like the driver simply failed to build.

Could you please find and attach your build log that shows this issue? The file will be found someplace like:

 /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/185.18.36/build/make.log

The numbered directory may be different depending on what version you have installed, but if you poke around it should be somewhere like that.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

same issue here: nvidia module builds fine, but isn't loaded at startup, so gdm cannot be started.

i added nvidia to /etc/modules in order to load the nvidia module at startup ...

it worries me, that this bug is tagged as `invalid', since it `breaks' the setup for many people, who may not have the experience of 10 years linux system administration
