Ubuntu release: 9.10
Kernel: 2.6.31-1-generic
Nvidia Driver: 185.18.14-0ubuntu1
DKMS:

When booting, the dkms installation for the current nvidia driver fails, and thus the graphical interface cannot start.

I can confirm this:

I don't think it is actually. I have no error installing or setting up linux-headers and installing. It's when I reboot with 2.6.31-1 that I get the DKMS error and the driver fails to start.

i have the same thing with karmic 64 bits and when i try to reconfigure dkms i got :

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure dkms
* Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.31-1-generic
* nvidia (185.18.14)... [fail]

Sorry plun, I was replying to 3vi1 and not you. I'm sure a patch is needed, but I'm willing to hold off and use 2.6.30 until this is officially resolved.

Are you saying you can run:

sudo dkms build -m nvidia -v 185.18.14 -k 2.6.31-1-generic

without error? If not I'm guessing this is a dup of bug 394262 as previously stated.
