nvidia-173 does not support video driver ABI in precise

Bug Description

Upon boot the Ubuntu bootscreen appears, but then disappears again leaving me hanging somewhere around "* Starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon [OK]".. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later. But I've yet to see my login screen or any X activity at all. I've tried with both nouveau and nvidia-current, no change in behaviour.

Jumping around to other tty sessions is not a problem and the system is working. Just not X..

If you need any more info, please just holler!

Try switching to nvidia-current.

nvidia-173 is a legacy driver and hasn't been updated yet to the new ABI

Tried upgrading to nvidia-current, but it still hangs in the same place. Same ABI error.

Can you try completely uninstalling nvidia-* and then re-installing nvidia-current from scratch?

I've already done it and it's now running fine on nouveau, but I'm AFK until Monday so I can't test current until then.

but the graphic card I am using (FX 5500) is supported by the legacy 173 driver and not the current one...
installing manually fails either way, since the nvidia-173 driver lacks the ABI support and it fails to start the x-server. and the nvidia-current wont work since when installing from the repository, it installs, but doesn't get enabled because of the graphic card not supported by it and the manual installation from the NVIDIA driver page fails because of the same reason.

...strange that "making new and better system actually makes the older components not 2 work"

nvidia-173 drivers are not compatible with Xorg (ABI to be precise) version released in 12.04.
So I stick with 11.10 version of Xorg. I had to make the following changes to backport Xorg:

In /etc/apt/sources.list :

deb http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main
deb-src http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main

In /etc/apt/preferences:

Package: xserver-xorg*
Pin: release a=oneiric
Pin-Priority: 1050

Note related to nvidia-173 on Ubuntu 12.04:
I'm using old hardware with nvidia-173 drivers and I don't like the fact "composite" is mandatory to use Unity correctly (very laggy) I had to force composite to switch it "off" to avoid laggy windows by modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
