Bug Description
Binary package hint: nvidia-173
Nvidia 173.14.27 crashes with Xserver 1.9 in Ubuntu maverick (development branch) Release: 10.10.
This affects users:
1. of legacy Nvidia cards using 173 drivers when upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 beta.
* 10.04 to 10.10 upgrade results in black screen.
** b. A clean failsafe/fallback using Nouveau would be better.
2. attempting to switch to 173 driver in Maverick.
Issue relates to compatibility between Nvidia 173.14.27 currently in Maverick and Xorg Xserver 1.9, also currently used in Maverick.
173.14.28 appears to fix the problem.

Thank you for your response.
Yes, the bug does appear to be a duplicate of 626918.
My comment with regard to this is that:
If the newer Nvidia -173 (173.14.28) is not ready for 10.10 launch, it
would minimise downtime and inconvenience for those with legacy Nvidia
cards (eg FX 5x00 series) if Nouveau could be substituted for
Nvidia-173 at upgrade. This will at least leave the users with
functional GUI Xserver.
