Bug Description

It seems that while the libvdpau_nvidia library is available for nvidia-current:

/usr/lib/nvidia-current/vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so.295.40

So such driver is available for nvidia-173-updates.

The nvidia 173 driver is meant to support GeForce FX 5 through GeForce 7000 series cards. These cards do have some video acceleration, but they do not support libvdpau. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_PureVideo#Nvidia_VDPAU_Feature_Sets

Although the 173.xx driver does support GeForce 8000 - GT/X 200 series cards, users of those cards should be using the 304.xx branch for optimum support (including VDPAU).
