Tried to update ubuntu because hardware drivers were not available (im stuck in 800x600 mode) and got an error on the updated kernel install instead THEREFORE HITHERTO i was unable to update.

Hello. I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS because of my lack of fondness for Unity. I am stuck in 800x600 mode in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS because the nvidia drivers are failing to work. I would appreciate any help on this issue.
