Saw the same thing this evening. when apt-gets spat out errors about linux-generic being only half configured. Ended up running:
sudo dpkg -C 2.6.37- 12-generic
sudo dpkg --configure linux-image-
sudo dpkg --configure linux-image-generic
sudo dpkg --configure linux-generic
but saw the same error during the configure of linux-image- 2.6.37- 12-generic.
