Bug Description

trying to switch to tty (CTRL+ALT+F**) i only get blank screens (out of range). It's not related to #48901 because i have no vga=xxx option in my grub menu.list. This problem only appears with nvidia driver, nv works without problems. i think the terminal works (i can access them by keyboard) but i have no screenoutput.
David

Workaround/Fix:
Using EnvyNG to install nvidia driver version 96.43.05 (probably any later version, too) resolves the problem.

Confirmed here also, originally had the virtual terminals prior to allowing Gutsy to install the nvidia restricted drivers. I have no vga=xxx in my /grub/menu.lst either.

Attempted to perform a fix mentioned by others of:
sudo modprobe vga16fb
sudo modprobe fbcon

With no improvement, please note I did not reboot if that was necessary as my BIOS is dieing and sometimes won't reboot the machine, I will risk it if someone confirms that a reboot is needed to try it however.

I get the same thing with the i945 integrated Intel graphics chip. Disabling desktop effects does not help.

Same here on nvidia, please move to critical....a linux distro with no terminals is not a linux distro....

I am having this problem too on :

Hardy Heron running 2.6.24-16-generic
Nvidia Geforce Go 6100

I tried removing the proprietry drivers which solved the problem. Reinstalling the proprietry drivers again simply brought back the problem.

Interestingly when i removed the proprietry driver and restarted X, i ended up with a blank screen and had to do a hard shutdown

I just used EnvyNG to install nvidia driver version 96.43.05 and that seems to have solved the problem

This also affects me. I'm using Hardy Heron on a dv6000 laptop. Switching to tty1 through tty6 used to work in Gutsy, but broke when I switched to Hardy.

Thank you Tatty: I installed envyng-gtk and installed the nvidia driver version 96.43.05, and that solved the problem.

I have the same problem : with nvidia drivers it's blank screen on all TTY from 1 to 6, so nothing to do more than hard reboot (by pressing power button more than 7 seconds).

nv work too.

I am on Hardy with KDE4.
My GC is 8800 GTS

With other kernel :

linux-image-2.6.19-rt I can use NVIDIA driver with no tty trouble.
With generic kernel -> problems

Tatty's solution worked perfectly for me on a HP Pavilion dv6000 with Hardy.

Thanks!

is this still an issue with current releases?

Last night I did a dist upgrade to Hardy and have no virtual terminals still, so yes it is still a problem.
I will try the fix using Envy to install nvidia driver version 96.43.05 if I can and see what happens.

Ok, I decided to try Envy sooner than I had planned or I would have waited to post the above comment.

Installing version 96.43.05 of the nvidia driver using Envy (shockingly simple thing to do which was a bonus) and I have my virtual terminals back, fingers crossed nothing else has broken or wine/cedega has suffered frame rate drops/breakages in games.

Thanks to Tatty for the solution. :]

Then it's definitely against the wrong package. nVidia is separate from lrm now.

I have just installed Intrepid Alpha 5, daily build september 17th, and the bug has gone for me.

Installed latest nvidia drivers from the Hardware Drivers manager and all tty's are available. In fact they seem to load quicker than in hardy.

Confirm here too with the nvidia-glx-177 drivers on Ubuntu 8.10 with nVidia GeForce 6200 graphics card. I reported this same bug in a previous release (Dapper?) and it was fixed in Gutsy, now it's broken again.

I just did:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia-glx-177 && sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-96

and rebooted and the problem is resolved.
