numlockx no longer turns numlock on

Bug Description

Binary package hint: numlockx

I have an Apple keyboard, which has no numlock button. Because of this, I have to use package numlockx to run the command "numlockx on" upon every boot, so that I have numlock. However, recently numlockx has stopped working. Issuing the command "numlockx on" no longer turns numlock on, as it used to.

I only follow the standard updates as distributed through Update Manager.
Looking back through Synaptic history, I haven't even installed any new
packages (aside from updates) since mid May.
