Bug Description

Binary package hint: ntfs-3g

All my system stops working when i use an usb storage media.
All system works well, and was working well till 3 weeks ago. When i try to do a backup, as i do every month or so, then my system began to work very hard, something was wrong, i look to the system monitor, and i saw [mount.ntfs] working very much, and all nautilus windows stop working, then the system crash.

Then shutdown my laptop and start it again, and this happen again every time i use my usb external hard drive.

Please help, thanks.

Does this happen on a specific file, or a specific target directory ? Does the copy eventually go through after unusual duration time ?

Please do a chkdsk /f on a Windows box (much recommended if you have shutdown your computer without unmounting), and post again if this does not fix the problem.

I checked my external hard drive with chkdsk /f on Windows, and windows
repair some errors but on ubuntu happen the same again, it crashes; this
happen just 3 min or so after i connect the usb hard drive.

Before all this happened, I usually connect my external hard drive and a
nautilus window opens after 10 sec, and a backup spends as much as 10 min;
now with this problem i connect the usb hard drive and no nautilus window
opens and everything crashes, after 3 min or so.
So is not a directory or a file.
The last backup I tried to do last to much time and mount.ntfs was using the
processor at 100%, and never ends, i wait about 30 min before forcing my
laptop to shutdown, it stopped responding.

Thanks for your help.

This could be a hardware issue. It could be useful you do a chkdsk again, saving the error messages to a file ("chkdsk /f X: > chkdsk.log") and post them. To identify possible bad sectors, do a "chkdsk /r".

How full is your partition ?
