FYI - Microsoft KB296250 is the article where they recommend using '.local'. It was last updated in 2007. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/296250

RFC6762 describes the use of mDNS and the .local TLD.

While RFC6762 came after Microsoft's KB article, RFCs describe industry standards and best practices.
